NewslettersSpring 1997 - page 5 Humanitarian Aid Program Going Strong By Pat Durkin Changes and restrictions in the materials which can be shipped to the former Soviet Union through US government aid programs, created a shift in WOW's humanitarian aid focus. During the first year of the program, WOW volunteers filled thirteen 20 ft. containers with shoes, clothing, pharmaceuticals and medical equipment for women and children in Russia. Now the generous donations of medical surplus, office equipment, clothing and household items are made available to Native American organizations and reservations in the Midwest. This program has allowed the Prairie Band Potawatomi and Kickapoo tribes to equip new satellite medical clinics with nurses stations, examining tables and wound dressings. A well-stocked Clothing Closet for students and their families at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas, fulfilled a continuing need.
We appreciate so much the assistance of Surplus Exchange and Southwest Technologies of Kansas City, MO; Kansas Surplus Exchange, Topeka, KS; and individual donors. Future donations may be arranged by contacting the Women of the World headquarters at (816) 746-6869. Our present wish list includes winter clothing especially for children.
