Women of the World Hosts Table
at Central Exchange Annual
Luncheon Featuring Joan Dunlop

Spotlight on Kansas City Women
Helping to Shape the Global
Community

WOW will host a table and display area at the Central Exchange Annual Luncheon on Wednesday, May 1, 2002, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center, located at 2345 McGee Street, Kansas City, Mo.

“The world has come closer to home, and that is reflected in women’s attitudes,” according to Joan Dunlop, a scholar and expert on how American women view foreign policy and their role in the world.

To put a spotlight on the potential global activism of American women, Dunlop designed and developed “A Women’s Lens on Global Issues,” a project of The Rockefeller Brothers Fund. The project was designed to identify the ideas and leadership that could build a new constituency of American women to foster U.S. international development and global engagement in the next century.

On May 1 that spotlight shifts to the women of Kansas City when Dunlop presents the keynote address to the Central Exchange Annual Luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center. Local women and organizations with a global reach will be featured.

“Together we can begin to create a national network of informed activists using a woman’s lens on global issues to effect policy change,” Ms. Dunlop said.

The basis for her speech is a national survey conducted in 2000 that examined the views of American men and women on a number of global issues. The survey found that American women are more likely than men to frame their foreign policy concerns around global social issues like health, poverty, and human rights.

Sixty-seven percent of the women surveyed said the most important reason for international involvement was responsibility to future generations. Conducted by Bolden Russonello & Stewart for the Aspen Institute, the poll surveyed 701 men and 1,500 women.

Cost of a ticket for Central Exchange members and non-members is $45. Please make your reservation by calling Liz at The Central Exchange, (816) 471-7560 ext 22, or via email to liz@centralexchange.org. To make a reservation on The Central Exchange Website, please visit www.centralexchange.org.

Dance of Hope
Film Reviews

"A highly emotional documentary capturing the political demonstrations, poverty, violence, and harassment endured by many Chileans during the past 16 years. Recommended for university library collections and for use in classes on South American politics and government."

Choice

"A powerful documentary... [a] rich assortment of social and political themes (e.g., hope in the face of repression, church vs. state, rich vs. poor) that could well be explored apart from the particularities of this period in Chile's history."
